The history of Heid clutches and brakes began when Nikolaus Heid founded the machine factory HEID AG in 1883, as a manufacturer of hydropower operated agricultural machinery. Over the years the company became an international player in the machine tool market as a leading manufacturer of reliable clutches and brakes.

HEID Antriebstechnik GmbH & Co KG started as an independent company in January 1988 after splitting Heid AG into four different entities.
